CORGI was the old gas safety registration body in the UK, replaced by the Gas Safe Register in 2009. Any engineer still claiming to be CORGI registered is either out of date or misleading you. The Gas Safe Register is now the only legally recognised body for gas work in the UK. Always check the Gas Safe Register website to verify your engineer's credentials.

If the boiler is being relocated, the flue route changed, or you are converting from a conventional system, the job can take 2 to 3 days. Your engineer should give you a clear timeline before starting and ensure you have hot water by the end of the final day.

Boiler error codes vary by manufacturer but typically indicate a specific fault — low pressure, ignition failure, fan fault, or overheating. Check your boiler manual or search for your boiler make and model plus the error code online. Some codes like low pressure (often E119 or F1) can be fixed yourself by repressurising, while others such as ignition lockout require a Gas Safe registered engineer.

At minimum, a boiler engineer must hold a Gas Safe registration covering the specific appliance category — for example, CENWAT for central heating wet and boilers. Many engineers also hold ACS (Accredited Certification Scheme) qualifications. For oil boilers, look for OFTEC registration. Manufacturer-specific training from brands like Worcester Bosch, Vaillant or Baxi is a further indicator of expertise.
